Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE)
These are types of medications which work by relaxing the blood vessels. This achieved by preventing the production of angiotensin which is the hormone responsible for narrowing of the blood vessels. The commonly used ACE inhibitors are lisinopril, ramipril, and enalapril.
Water pills (diuretics)
These pills work by removing excess sodium and water from the body. This helps in lowering the amount of fluid which is flowing through the blood vessels. This, in turn, relieves pressure on the walls of blood vessels. Types of diuretics include loop, thiazide, and potassium-spring. Thiazide is recommended for treating heart problems and high blood pressure which are related to hypertension. Another type of medication should be added in case the diuretics used are not enough to lower the blood pressure.
Rennin enzyme is produced by the kidneys. Production of this enzyme can trigger an increase in the blood pressure. Tekturna (aliskiren ) is used in slowing down the production of this enzyme.
Calcium channel blockers
They work by preventing calcium from entering the blood vessels and the heart cells thereby causing relaxation of the cells. Most of the commonly used calcium channel blockers are diltiazem (Tiazac, Cardizem ) amlodipine (Norvasc), and nifedipine( Afeditab CR, Procardia, and Adalat CC).
These are also referred to as beta-adrenergic blocking compound or agents. They are aimed at blocking the effects produced by epinephrine hormone or adrenaline. These hormones are the leading causes of a slow heartbeat.
